The Calgary Colts Secured Back to Back National Championships in the 1989 and 1990 seasons.
Always competitive, the Colts captured their first national championship in 1989. Under the direction of head coach Keith Kendall, the Colts finished fourth in the regular season and then shocked Regina and Saskatoon in the playoffs. The Colts staged another upset in the Canadian Bowl, defeating the favored Burlington Tiger Cats 23-6 at McMahon Stadium.
The following year the Colts placed second in the regular season and beat the Hilltops in overtime at McMahon Stadium in the semifinals. Calgary then beat the Rams at Regina to win the conference. The playoff trail was long in 1990 as the Colts beat the no. 1 Surrey Rams at Vancouver and the Thunder Bay Giants in a game at Winnipeg. The Colts then rolled to a 50-15 win over the host Windsor AKO to claim their second consecutive Canadian Bowl.
Nominated by Sean Weimer, a member of both the 1989 & 1990 teams, the Calgary Colts teams of both seasons have him to thank for creating the nomination package a few years ago. Current President and 1989 alumni Mike Tuff says, “this is amazing and exciting news for the Calgary Colts organization, for the alumni and for amateur football in Calgary.” Long time GM Keith Evans, who has worked tirelessly for the Calgary Colts Football club for decades is incredibly proud of the announcement and looks forward to the celebration. Those championship team members set the bar for the Calgary Colts Football club and are honoured to be recognized. The induction was officially announced on Feb 26, 2018 by the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame. The banquet to celebrate this year’s inductions is being held June 1, 2018 in Red Deer, Alberta. The banquet is attended by more than 600 North American athletes each year. For tickets and more information, visit the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame Website.
